An isolation transformer is a transformer used to transfer electrical power from a source of alternating current (AC) power to some equipment or device while isolating the powered device from the power source, usually for safety. Isolation transformers provide galvanic isolation and are used to protect against electric shock, suppress electrical noise in sensitive devices, or transfer power between two circuits that must not be connected. Suitably designed isolation transformers block interference caused by ground loops. Isolation transformers with electrostatic shields are used for power supplies for sensitive equipment such as computers or laboratory instruments. Strictly speaking, any true transformer, whether used to transfer signals or power, is isolating, as the primary and secondary are not connected by conductors but only by induction. However, only transformers whose primary purpose is to isolate circuits (as opposed to the more common transformer function of voltage conversion), are routinely described as isolation transformers. Given this function, a transformer sold for isolation is often built with special insulation between primary and secondary, and is tested, specified, and marked to withstand a high voltage between windings.

The isolation transformers significantly reduce the voltage spikes before reaching the secondary windings because of the rising time of current through an inductor.

We know the current in an inductor rises at an exponential rate. As the current increases – the expanding magnetic field cuts through the conductors of the coil and induces a voltage that is opposed to the applied voltage (by virtue of Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction and Lenz’s law) The amount of induced voltage e α L * (di/dt) is proportional to the rate of change in current. The faster the current tends to rise; the higher will be the opposition to the sudden change in current.

Spike voltages and currents are usually of a very short period, and they rise very rapidly. Such a surge causes the opposition to the change also to increase that rapidly.

Therefore, in case an inductor is introduced in between the circuit the time taken by the spike to reach the secondary winding will significantly increase, and in the meantime, the spike will get considerably reduced or could be even completely eliminated.

An Auto Transformer is a transformer with only one winding wound on a laminated core. An autotransformer is similar to a two-winding transformer but differs in the way the primary and secondary winding are interrelated. In an ordinary transformer, the primary and the secondary windings are electrically insulated from each other but connected magnetically as shown in the figure below. While in an autotransformer the primary and the secondary windings are connected magnetically as well as electrically. In fact, a part of the single continuous winding is common to both primary and secondary.

The primary winding AB from which a tapping at C is taken, such that CB acts as a secondary winding. The supply voltage is applied across AB, and the load is connected across CB. The tapping may be fixed or variable. When an AC voltage V1 is applied across AB, an alternating flux is set up in the core, as a result, an emf E1 is induced in the winding AB. A part of this induced emf is taken in the secondary circuit.

There are several differences between the autotransformer and the isolation transformer. One of the major differences between them is that the autotransformer has only one winding whereas the conventional transformer has two separate windings.
